In the previous blog post “Stop Talking to the Hand“, we described how ineffective communication can be when we are not connecting with the person we are wanting to communicate with, so I thought I would expand on this idea and share the content from today’s Live Broadcast on Facebook.
Key points from today’s Live Broadcast:
There are two ways to communicate:
- Broadcasting (Machine Gun Approach)
- Conversations (Sniper Approach)
When you are broadcasting you are using a machine gun approach, putting it out there and just hoping to hit a target.
When you have real conversations with individuals, you are targeting your messaging to that person, connecting on a heart-to-heart level.
Which do you think is going to have the most influence?
In relation to Kath Mazzella OAM’s question about how to influence leaders with her Gynaecological message, my response is you are one person, Kath. You can’t possibly change a whole culture on your own. You need to make disciples. Gather, educate, inspire, train and release back out there disciples to carry the message for you.
If you want to engage leaders, you will need to court them. When you are courting someone you don’t rush the relationship. You don’t go let’s hop into bed and have sex on the first date. You find your common ground by sharing stories. Then once a connection is established, you can put the hard word on them.
If you demonstrate that you are calm and confident about your message, your patience and persistence will eventually pay off. But equally, if you come across as angry, frustrated and pissed off that everyone is not listening to you and responding in the way that you want them to do, you will push them away. Your desperation will be off-putting, just like it is in a relationship setting.
The key is to establish the heart connection first, then draw them into your message, way and plans.
